Figr, Foile, Hommey & Great Wrap
We sat down with founders Alexandra Grima from Foile, Eloise and Eloise from FIGR and Justin from Hommey, to ask them questions about their businesses and gained some insights into their roles, to support our current giveaway (see entry details below).
Great Wrap: Tell us about Foile and why you started the business.
Alexandra: "Su and I felt drawn to creating more approachable and progressive skincare. Our products are vegan, cruelty-free, genderless, refillable and non-toxic, utilising rich botanicals and essential actives to achieve visible results. We worked collaboratively with a boutique design firm in Sydney to create our signature bottles — they needed to be high quality for longevity and sit beautifully in the bathroom."
Great Wrap: What would surprise people about your role at Foile?
Alexandra: "How different every day is! I try to keep the balance between admin, emails/calls and seeing the importance of making space for creativity."
Great Wrap: Tell us about FIGR and why you started the business.
Eloise and Eloise: "FIGR is a sex brand that’s formulating beautiful, sustainable and good-for-your-body lubricants locally in Naarm/Melbourne.
We both noticed that when being on antidepressants, we can struggle with low libido and with that, you’re gifted with a lack of lubrication. We were seeking a brand that looked beautiful, which you could leave on your nightstand without feeling the stigmatised shame that society has pressed on sexual liberation."
At the time, the options were lacking products that weren’t designed strictly for the male gaze, along with kind ingredients that didn’t disrupt our pH levels, leaving us with a few too many yeast infections. So instead of just waiting for a product to be released, we created exactly what we wanted. This has opened up the door to us having complete creative freedom over something we’re truly passionate about!"
Great Wrap: What would surprise people about your role at FIGR?
Eloise and Eloise: "People think that owning a sex brand would be a lot sexier than it is. Eloise O hasn’t had sex in eight months, which sometimes makes her feel like an imposter. Eloise M decided to start a side business alongside her small business making leadlight glass pieces, just so she’d have absolutely no downtime and never have to be alone with her thoughts. Overall we’re two hot messes trying to make sense of this business we’ve created whilst trying not to be stressed."
Great Wrap: Tell us about Hommey and why you started the business.
Justin: "I saw a gap in the soft furnishings market. I decided to create a destination brand that would help millennials make their home comfy and stylish through aspirational imagery, quality products, sustainable and ethical materials, and, most importantly, an accessible price point. Curating comfort for your home is our number one priority because we understand that home is more than just a place to live — it’s a place to get comfy (and Hommey)."
Great Wrap: What would surprise people about your role at Hommey?
Justin: "People would be surprised about how small our team is (three and a bit of us), and as a result, the amount of balls I’m juggling at any given time is what probably makes me a little crazy."
